Monument

The Tri-Lakes Area is nestled along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains and located between Colorado Springs and Denver . The "Tri-Lakes" attracts people from all over who come to experience the beauty and a close-by "get away experience" to our mountains and outdoor settings and to experience our friendly shops and businesses. They come to share in our attractive lifestyle and healthy economy.

The Tri-Lakes area is named for its three lakes in Woodmoor, Monument and Palmer Lake and includes a number of other communities from Larkspur in Douglas County to the north and El Paso County communities to the south including the United States Air Force Academy, Gleneagle and Black Forest . We are centered approximately 20 miles north of Colorado Springs and 40 miles south of Denver .

The entire region from hilly grasslands to pine forests, magnificent mountains and lots of sunshine all contribute to an exceptional quality of life. We have approximately 250 days of sunshine with a nice seasonal balance of dry air with moderate winters and mild summers.

Monument’s first homesteaders arrived in 1865 to mark out the town’s preliminary shape. Incorporated in 1879, it was first called Henry’s Station, after Henry Limbach, one of the original settlers. Its name was changed to Monument when the Denver & Rio Grande railroad came through after the Civil War in 1870 linking Denver and Colorado Springs . Today, Monument’s historic district still reflects an era of bygone days with its small-town character.

Monument Rock stands amidst the Monument Open Space Preserve, a symbol of the town's enduring nature. As part of the Santa Fe Trailhead, there are many trails around the rock offering paths for horseback riding, dog walking and jogging. Community events throughout the year add to Monument's charm. Events and programs such as Music in the Park and Art Hop are organized by the Historic Monument Merchant's Association.

Trails for horse back riding, hiking and biking are numerous. A sixteen mile stretch of the Santa Fe Trail extends from Palmer Lake to the south entrance of the Air Force Academy. The Greenland trailhead winds through rolling grasslands, past ponds, through oak scrublands and pines where fox and deer are frequently seen. Other outdoor activities include golf with four scenic golf courses and a spectacular view of the mountains.

The town of Monument at an elevation of 6,900 ft. maintains its small town atmosphere with unique shops and restaurants. Monument is named after Monument Rock, a majestic natural wonder located off Mount Herman Road. Numerous trails surrounding the rock are perfect for a casual forest stroll.

One of the states most visited tourist attractions is The United States Air Force Academy. It is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains just north of Colorado Springs, adjacent to Gleneagle and just south of the Monument-Palmer Lake area. The aerodynamic design of the Chapel with seventeen spires that reach 150 feet up towards the azure sky is the most prominent landmark at the academy.

Monument Plaza offers a unique blend of quality shopping all within walking distance of one another. Located off Highway 105, shoppers will find galleries, home décor, book and specialty stores, as well as restaurants and professional service businesses. For major purchases, Jackson Creek , the commercial expansion of Monument offers a range of national chain store shopping mixed with smaller retail and service businesses along with office condominiums and restaurants.
